From Miley Cyrus to an Australian vying to become Prime Minister, the global phenomenon of twerking has gone mainstream.

The dance craze, started in the New Orleans 'bounce' music scene of the early 90s - before Miley was even born - has even been honored with an official entry in the Oxford Dictionaries Online.

Although it has been around for decades, twerking had its most main-stream appearance to date with former clean cut child star Miley Cyrus gyrating around singer Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night.
